January's artwork of the month marks the 950th anniversary of the death of Edward the Confessor. It is a preparatory watercolour drawing by Robert Anning Bell for a large mosaic in St Stephen's Hall depicting King Stephen, Saint Stephen and King Edward the Confessor.
Edward the Confessor, one of the last Anglo-Saxon Kings of England died in Westminster on 5 January 1066. He died a week after the new Abbey he had built at Westminster had been consecrated, and was buried there the day after his death.
