Committee questions Secretary of State on trade agreement negotiations and COVID-19 response

23 June 2020

The International Trade Committee returns with a virtual evidence session on Wednesday 24 June, featuring the Secretary of State for International Trade, Liz Truss MP.

Progress of negotiations and future of DIT

The Department for International Trade (DIT) has launched free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations with several countries, including the United States and Japan. In this session, the Committee will question the Secretary of State on the progress being made in the negotiations, as well as on the future of DIT following the Prime Minister's announcement last week that Trade Commissioners will become the responsibility of the new Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

DIT role in Government's response to COVID-19

The Committee will also consider the role DIT has played in the Government's response to COVID-19, including the support provided to exporters. The Committee is currently conducting an inquiry into the pandemic's effects on international trade, including examining how the UK should engage with countries at the World Trade Organization and bilateral trading partners to promote international cooperation and a coordinated global response to the pandemic.
