What commitments did the Government make to Nissan?

The International Trade Committee takes evidence from Nissan, following the Government writing to them giving assurances that trading conditions for their car plant in Sunderland would not change after the UK leaves the EU.

Purpose of the session

Last year, the Government wrote to Nissan giving assurances that trading conditions for their car plant in Sunderland would not change after the UK leaves the EU. The exact details of what has been indicated to Nissan have not yet been disclosed. Nissan have since announced that two new models will be manufactured at the plant, but also stated that they will re-evaluate their position once the Brexit settlement is known.

The evidence session will examine the commitments made by the Government to Nissan. What influenced Nissan's decision to manufacture its models in Sunderland?

It will also look at the impact of potential customs scenarios on car manufacturers in the UK. What are the key factors that influence Nissan's long-term future in the UK? What contingencies have they planned for operating under World Trade Organisation rules or any other circumstances?
