Committee questions the Secretary of State

12 July 2018

This session examines the Department for International Trade's overall strategy for developing an independent trade policy, as well as the Department's priorities and progress in achieving its objectives since Dr Fox's previous appearance before the Committee last November.

At 2.30pm

  • Rt Hon Dr Liam Fox MP, Secretary of State for International Trade and President of the Board of Trade

Following the Cabinet meeting at Chequers last week, and ahead of the anticipated publication of a Government white paper on the future relationship between the UK and the European Union on Thursday, the session will provide the Committee with an opportunity to question the Secretary of State on how the eventual shape of the future relationship will impact on the work of his department, and its ability to deliver on previously highlighted priorities.

One such future priority for the Department is to strike new trade deals across the globe. With formal talks on free trade agreements yet to begin, but the parameters of the future relationship becoming ever clearer, the Committee will investigate how the Department plans to prioritise these deals, what it has achieved so far in its discussions to scope new agreements, and how it intends to adapt to any constraints within which it may be required to operate.

The Committee will also question the Secretary of State on the UK's future role in the multilateral trade system, in light of ongoing trade disputes between various key actors, and the imposition of tariffs by the United States, China and European Union. With President Donald Trump set to visit the UK later this week, the Committee is also expected to focus on the likelihood of a free trade agreement between the UK and the United States – a subject examined by the Committee during this Parliament.
