Secretary of State questioned on Brexit, gig economy and Industrial Strategy

The Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee hears from Business Secretary, Greg Clark MP, on the work of the Department. Questions are likely to focus on the Government's new Industrial Strategy, the impact of Brexit and the Committee Report on the Taylor Review in to modern working practices.

Industrial Strategy and the Budget

The inquiry in to the implications of Brexit for business has previously heard from both the automotive and aerospace sectors and the Committee will put concerns raised in those sessions to the Secretary of State.

The session will also provide an early chance to question Mr Clark on the Industrial Strategy, following the publication of the White Paper, and issues arising out of last week's Budget.

The Secretary of State faces questions on how the Government will respond to the Committee's joint Report on the Taylor Review, which was published last week alongside a draft Bill aimed at ending exploitation in the gig economy.

Worrying productivity problem

Rachel Reeves MP, Chair of the BEIS Committee, said:

"We will be putting the concerns of businesses in the aerospace and automotive sector over Brexit to the Secretary of State and asking him how the Government is planning to ease those fears as part of the exit negotiations.

We will be asking the Business Secretary how the Government is going to address the worrying productivity problem and whether the recent measures announced will rectify long term under-performance. We will also have a first look at the Government's Industrial Strategy.

Finally, we will want to press the Minister on how the Government plans to take forward the Taylor Review, following up on the report our committee published on this last Monday."
