Campaign organisations questioned on gender pay gap

The Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee questions campaign organisations as part of its inquiry into the gender pay gap. The panel features witnesses from the Fawcett Society, 30% Club and the TUC. A session with representatives from companies will take place at a later date.

Compliance with reporting

The session will focus on issues around compliance with the reporting requirements as well as the accuracy of submissions and what needs to be done to tackle the gap.

The deadline for companies with more than 250 employees to publish their gender pay gap figures has now passed and it is estimated that more than 1,500 firms have failed to submit their data.

Inexplicably high pay gap at far too many companies

Rachel Reeves MP, Chair of the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee, said:

"Published submissions show an inexplicably high pay gap at far too many companies, so we are keen to hear what actions and strategies are needed to tackle this.

There is also an unacceptably high number of firms which have failed to meet the reporting deadline so this session will be a chance to explore issues around the challenges companies face in submitting their data and the effectiveness of sanctions against those that fail to comply."

The inquiry 'Corporate Governance – Delivering on fair pay' is examining issues around the compliance of businesses with reporting requirements on the gender pay gap, such as whether the regulations are properly capturing the salaries of staff, and what steps companies are taking to address the pay gap.

The Committee will also look at measures to be taken against companies which do not comply with reporting requirements.

The Committee is inviting written submissions on the following questions:

  • Whether the annual information related to pay required under the Equality Act 2010 is sufficient? Should any further information be required?
  • What is the extent of compliance? Is the information accurate? 
  • How effective are the sanctions for non-compliance with reporting requirements?
  • What requirements, if any, should there be on companies to address gender pay gaps?

The deadline for submissions has been extended to 27 April.
