Lord Deben questioned on Clean Growth Strategy

7 February 2018

The Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee hears from Lord Deben, the Chairman of the Committee on Climate Change.

Emissions and carbon reduction targets

The Committee on Climate Change was set up to provide the Government with independent advice on emissions targets and reports to Parliament on progress made reducing greenhouse gases.

MPs are likely to want to question Lord Deben on the Government's efforts to meet carbon reduction targets and raise points from the evidence given by Climate Change Minister Claire Perry when she appeared before the Committee in November.

Ambitions alone are not enough

Commenting on the Clean Growth Strategy last month, Lord Deben said:

"The Clean Growth Strategy is ambitious in its aims to build a thriving low-carbon Britain but ambitions alone are not enough. As it stands, the Strategy does not deliver enough action to meet the UK's emissions targets in the 2020s and 2030s.

The Government's policies and proposals will need to be firmed up as a matter of urgency – and supplemented with additional measures – if the UK is to deliver on its legal commitments and secure its position as an international climate change leader."
