UK productivity
The former Transport Secretary resigned as Chair of the National Infrastructure Commission in December. The body was established to provide the Government with impartial advice on long-term infrastructure challenges.
The Committee will also be taking evidence from members of the Industrial Strategy Commission, including Chair Dame Kate Barker. The Commission published its own Industrial Strategy for the UK in November, ahead of the Government's white paper.
The Industrial Strategy: sector deals and productivity inquiry is examining the effect the Industrial Strategy will have on raising the UK's productivity with a focus on four sectors - off-shore wind, construction, retail, and hospitality.
People-focused sectors
Rachel Reeves MP, Chair of the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee, said:
"In our first public evidence session in our inquiry into the Government's Industrial Strategy, we will be hearing from witnesses who have looked in detail at the Government's plans to raise productivity in the UK and made recommendations of their own.
The Industrial Strategy and its sector deals need to ensure that the long tail of low productivity in the UK is reduced, and we will be looking at how this challenge is managed in people-focused sectors and regions that do not often feature in news of major investment."
