Darren Jones, BEIS Committee Chair welcomes Government’s new Climate Change targets
21 April 2021
Darren Jones, Chair of the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) Committee has commented on the Government’s announcement that it will set the climate change target into law to reduce emissions by 78% by 2035 compared to 1990 levels, announced today (Tuesday 20 April).
Darren Jones, BEIS Committee Chair, said:
“The Government’s move to commit to steeper cuts in carbon emissions is welcome. Ahead of COP26, it’s vital the Government show global leadership by taking decisive action on the UK's domestic ambitions and it is welcome they have accepted the Climate Change Committee’s advice in full. It’s good news that international aviation and shipping are now included in our decarbonisation targets.
“Delivery is key. We now need to see a step change from setting targets to bringing forward action plans. I look forward to seeing the delivery detail in the net zero strategy and the Treasury’s net zero review showing where the money and investment will come from to deliver on the Government’s climate change ambitions”.
