International Relations and Defence Committee announces new inquiry into UK-US relations

7 November 2024

The House of Lords International Relations and Defence Committee has decided to launch an inquiry into the future of UK-US relations. The international security landscape has turned increasingly volatile and multilateral organisations are under strain. The inquiry will assess the state of the transatlantic relationship, explore the impact a second Trump Administration may have on it (as well as the rules-based international order), and what trends in US foreign policy are likely to persist and influence the relationship beyond the next four years.

At this stage, commentary of what precisely Donald Trump’s victory means for Ukraine and European security, China, the Middle East, NATO and the role of other international organisations remains largely speculative. Yet as the incoming Administration takes shape in the weeks and months ahead, we expect to learn more about the new Administration’s US foreign policy priorities and approach.

Timeline

The Committee intends to open its formal call for written evidence on or shortly after president-elect Trump’s inauguration on 20 January 2025. It will also hold oral evidence sessions from February. Further information will be made available on the Committee’s webpage.
