The witness is likely to face questions on the Government's decision not to opt in to the Directive on access to a lawyer.

The Directive which the Committee has retained under scrutiny since 2011 introduces a right for criminal suspects to access legal advice following arrest. It was adopted by the participating EU Member States in October 2013.

The Government confirmed that it would not be participating in October last year.
