This week, the EU Justice Sub-Committee, under the Chairmanship of Baroness Kennedy of The Shaws, continues its inquiry into the ramifications of Brexit for the future protection of intellectual property rights. The Committee will hear from leading experts, Kevin Mooney of Simmons & Simmons and Stephen Jones, President of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys, about EU based patent protection and the Unified Patent Court (UPC). Amongst many matters, the Committee is particularly looking forward to exploring the impact of Brexit on the UK's participation in the UPC, a division of which is expected to be based in London.     

 Questions are likely to include:

• What is the relationship between the European Patent Convention, EU law and the Unified Patent Court (UPC)?
• Does Brexit pose any dangers to the broader protection of patent rights in the UK?
• What are the positive aspects of Brexit for the protection of patent rights in the UK?
