Academic experts give evidence to European Investment Bank inquiry

24 October 2018

EU Financial Affairs Committee hears evidence from academics on investment funding.

Witnesses

  • Laurie Macfarlane, Public Banking Lead, UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP)
  • Josh Ryan-Collins, Head of Research, UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP)

Likely questions

The Committee launched its inquiry into the UK's post-Brexit relationship with the EIB, in July 2018. In this evidence session, the committee will be asking:

  • Should the UK establish its own state investment bank to replace EIB funding?
  • What are the benefits to having an independent institution compared to schemes run directly by the Government?
  • Would a state investment bank be able to acquire the necessary scale and expertise before December 2020? Would there be a 'financing gap'?
  • How would a UK state investment bank affect public finances? Would it be affected by state aid rules?
