Post-Brexit food prices discussed by Minister

The EU Energy and Environment Sub-Committee hears from the Minister of State for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food on the possible impact of Brexit on the availability and price of food.

Areas of discussion

Thirty per cent of food consumed in the UK comes from the EU. Members will ask the Minister what potential impact leaving the EU could have on the price and availability of food for UK consumers. Topics likely to be discussed include:

  • What benefits Brexit could have for food prices and availability;
  • Whether the UK could produce more of its own food;
  • The risks and benefits of importing more food from non-EU countries;
  • Future tariffs on importing food from the EU;
  • The impact of additional border and customs checks; and
  • Whether Brexit could increase food inequality.
