Impact of Brexit on food prices examined by Committee

The EU Energy and Environment Sub-Committee hosts a roundtable discussion to explore whether Brexit could have an impact on the price or availability of food in the UK

Areas of discussion

Thirty per cent of food consumed in the UK comes from the EU, including over 83 per cent of its fresh vegetables and 40 per cent of fresh fruit. The Committee will explore what impact, if any, Brexit may have on the price and availability of food in the UK. Likely areas of questioning include:

  • The impact of any post-Brexit trade tariffs
  • The impact of non-tariff barriers, including additional border checks and customs procedures
  • Whether more food could be produced in the UK
  • The reliance of the UK food industry on EU labour
  • The impact of leaving the Common Agricultural Policy
