Committee calls in Levelling Up Secretary over Government response to report on governance arrangements for England

1 March 2023

The Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee has today criticised the Government for a lack of attention and engagement with its recommendations to reform the governance of England.

In its response to the Governing England report, published today, the Government rejects the Committee’s recommendation to set up a cross-party Commission on the governance arrangements for England. The Committee is concerned that the Government’s refusal will mean the issue will “remain a political football”.

The Committee has called on the Levelling Up Secretary, Michael Gove, to account for the response in a public evidence session before the Easter recess. It has also written to the leaders of the Labour Party, SNP and Liberal Democrats urging them again to engage with the cross-party Commission recommendation.

The Committee concluded in its report last October that the Government’s plans for devolution deals in its Levelling Up White Paper are not sufficient to address the concerns with the governance arrangements in England, highlighted in the report.
