Allowances and tax arrangements for foster carers to be debated by MPs

10 January 2024

On Monday 15 January, MPs will debate a petition relating to allowances and tax arrangements for foster carers

Review and increase foster care allowances and tax exemptions

The petition, which has more than 13,000 signatures, states: “We want the Government to review and increase allowances paid to foster carers, and also tax exemption levels for foster carers, so they reflect the true cost of caring for a child.”

In its response to the petition, provided on 31 March 2023, the Government said: “Allowances are reviewed annually. Minimum rates will rise by 12.43% from April. Tax allowances for foster carers have been reviewed and rise from April, representing an average annual tax cut of £450.”

What are petitions debates?

Petitions debates are 'general' debates which allow MPs from all parties to discuss the important issues raised by one or more petitions, and put their concerns to Government Ministers.

Petition debates don’t end with a vote to implement the request of a petition. This means MPs will not vote on the request of the petition at the end of the debate.

Petition debates are scheduled by the Petitions Committee. Only e-petitions started on the parliament petitions site are considered by the Petitions Committee.
