State pension to be debated by MPs

7 December 2022

On Monday 12 December, MPs debate a petition relating to the State Pension

Marsha De Cordova MP, a member of the Petitions Committee, has been asked by the Committee to open the debate. MPs from all parties can take part, and the Government will send a minister to respond.

Increasing State Pensions

The petition, which has more than 109,000 signatures, states: “The Government should restore the state pension age back to 60 for men and women, because, people should not have to wait until their mid to late 60's to claim the state pension, as many people have worked from a young age, and their health deteriorates long before they are able to claim the state pension.

In its response to the petition, provided on 21 September 2022, the Government said: “The Government has no plans to increase State Pension to £380 per week or reduce State Pension age to 60.”

What are petitions debates?

Petitions debates are 'general' debates which allow MPs from all parties to discuss the important issues raised by one or more petitions, and put their concerns to Government Ministers.

Petition debates don’t end with a vote to implement the request of a petition. This means MPs will not vote to decide on increasing the state pension or reducing the retirement age at the end of the debate.
