Decisions of the Petitions Committee Tuesday 16 June 2020

The Committee considered all e-petitions which had, before 11 June 2020, reached over 100,000 signatures, and those over 10,000 signatures which had received a Government response. The Committee also considered debates on e-petitions, and a revised response from the Government.

 

Petition debates

The Committee agreed to debate petitions calling for the Government to reward and recognise health and social care workers during the afternoon of Thursday 25 June, on the motion ‘That this House has considered e-Petitions relating to the recognition and reward of health and social care workers.’. The Chair will lead the debate. 

The Committee agreed to debate petitions calling for Covid-19 support for industry during the afternoon of Thursday 25 June, on the motion ‘That this House has considered e-Petitions relating to support for UK industries in response to Covid-19.’. Theresa Villiers MP will lead the debate.  

The Committee agreed to hold an evidence session related to the inquiry on online abuse on Thursday 2 July. This evidence session has been moved from Thursday 25 June.

 

Petitions with 100,000 signatures

Provide financial help to zoos, aquariums, & rescue centres during the pandemic 
The Committee agreed to notify petitioners about the Government’s announcement regarding zoos. The Committee also agreed to tag this petition to the debate on Thursday 23 June. 

Reduce curriculum content for year 10 & 12 students who will sit exams in 2021 
The Committee agreed to notify petitioners of the Education Committee’s inquiry into this topic, and bring the petition to the Education Committee’s attention.  

Replace Breed Specific Legislation with a new statutory framework 
The Committee agreed to consider this petition for debate, when debates in Westminster Hall resume. Theresa Villiers MP agreed to lead the activity. 

Allow Zoos and Wildlife attractions to reopen with social distancing in place 
The Committee agreed to notify petitioners about the Government’s announcement regarding zoos. The Committee also agreed to tag this petition to the debate on Thursday 23 June.

 

Petitions with over 10,000 signatures which have received a government response 

Ban non-stun slaughter in the UK 
The Committee agreed to request a revised response from the Government, as the response did not address the direct request of the petition. 

Delay the reopening of schools to September 
The Committee agreed to request a revised response from the Government, as the response did not address the direct request of the petition.

Give the British Nationals (Overseas) of Hong Kong full British citizenship 
The Committee noted the Government’s response. 

Business Rate Relief to be extended to all small businesses in healthcare 
The Committee noted the Government’s response. 

Extend proposed Graduate visa route to 2019-20 batch of students due to COVID19 
The Committee noted the Government’s response. 

Remove the 50% earnings barrier so all self employed workers to receive support 
The Committee noted the Government’s response. 

 

Revised Government responses 

Refund university rent and tuition fees due to coronavirus 
The Committee noted the revised response, and agreed that it should be published.
