Decisions of the Petitions Committee Tuesday 12 May

The Committee considered all e-petitions which had, before 13 May 2020, reached over 100,000 signatures, those over 10,000 signatures which had received a Government response, and those which had received a revised Government response. The Committee also considered a petition for decision by the Committee, and a public petition which had received a Government observation.

Petitions with 100,000 signatures

Extend maternity leave by 3 months with pay in light of COVID-19
The Committee decided to take further oral evidence on this petition, including from the relevant Government minister. 

Hold online trolls accountable for their online abuse via their IP address
The Committee decided to investigate how to tackle online abuse, and to take oral evidence from the creator of this petition.  

Reimburse all students of this year’s fees due to strikes and COVID-19 
The Committee decided to take further oral evidence on this petition, from the relevant Government minister.


Petitions with over 10,000 signatures which have received a government response 

Cut beer duty for at least 12 months, so pubs can survive after the covid virus
The Committee decided to request a revised response, that more directly addresses the request of the petition.  

Increase pay for NHS healthcare workers and recognise their work
The Committee noted the response.  

Give non-British citizens who are NHS workers automatic citizenship
The Committee noted the response.  


Revised Government responses 

Require British Sign Language Interpreters for emergency announcements on TV 
The Committee noted the revised response and requested that it be published.
