First World War medals acquired for Parliamentary Art Collection

1 November 2016

A group of medals and awards belonging to a House of Commons Clerk killed in the First World War has been acquired for the Parliamentary Art Collection.

Major Horace Salkeld Green

The group was awarded to Major Horace Salkeld Green (1883–1917), who from 1907 worked as a Junior Clerk in the House of Commons, becoming an Assistant Clerk in 1913.

Major Green was among the many parliamentary staff members who fought in the First World War, and one of five Committee Clerks to be killed.

Serving with the 7th (City of London) Battalion, The London Regiment, he fell on 20 November 1917 while commanding two companies at the Battle of Passchendaele.

He is commemorated in the House of Commons Book of Remembrance 1914–1918, and on war memorials in St Stephen's Porch and the Committee Office.

Medals

The medals include Major Green's British War Medal and Victory Medal, awarded after his death for service during war. These are joined by four shooting awards from his time at the University of Cambridge and the Inns of Court Officer Training Corps.

Acquired by the Speaker's Advisory Committee on Works of Art, the group joins the House of Commons' significant collection of medals and coins (part of the Parliamentary Art Collection).
