Artwork of the Month - November 2015

30 October 2015

The artwork of the month for November 2015 is the marble bust of Oliver Cromwell.

The marble bust of Oliver Cromwell, selected to mark the anniversary of the Putney Debates, one of Parliament's 2015 Historic Anniversaries, is sited in the Lower Waiting Hall, in the Palace of Westminster.

Between 28 October and 9 November 1647, after the defeat of King Charles I in the first hostilities of the Civil War, representatives of Oliver Cromwell's New Model Army and radical Levellers met in a church in Putney to debate on the constitution and future of England. These became known as the 'Putney Debates' and are considered one of the central events in the development of our democracy.
