Lieutenant General (Retd) Richard Nugee to explore defence and climate change

On Tuesday 22 November, at 10.30, the Committee will hold an evidence session with Lieutenant General (Retd) Richard Nugee as part of its inquiry into defence and climate change.

The session will examine the Ministry of Defence’s strategy for combatting climate change and how the United Kingdom’s Armed Forces might be adapted to better respond to the impact of climate change.
Lieutenant General (Retd) Richard Nugee wrote the review of the Ministry of Defence’s approach to climate change and sustainability, leading directly to the 2021 Ministry of Defence Climate Change and Sustainability Strategic Approach. Since retiring, he has been appointed the Non-Executive Director for Climate Change and Net Zero in the Ministry of Defence.
Topics likely to be covered include the key challenges that climate change poses to each of the Armed Services, how the Ministry of Defence’s carbon footprint reduction targets compare to other countries, and the conclusions of the Climate Change and Sustainability Strategic Approach.
