Can the Government make tax digital for small businesses?

On Wednesday 22 February 2017 officials from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and HM Treasury give evidence to the Economic Affairs Finance Bill Sub-Committee on the Government's proposals to Make Tax Digital (MTD) that will see small businesses and residential landlords keeping digital records and providing quarterly updates.

  • How much will it cost small businesses to move to a digital system? Why do accountants and small businesses think the cost will be much higher than the Government's assessment predicts?

  • Is it realistic to start the scheme in April 2018? Is there enough time for a full pilot?
  • What free software will be available to businesses?
  • What will HMRC do to make sure small businesses are aware of the changes and support them?
  • Which businesses should be exempt?
