Following the session, the Committee will publish a report on its view on Dame Rachel’s suitability for the role, which the Education Secretary will then consider before deciding whether to proceed with the appointment.

The Committee will ask Dame Rachel questions designed to test the professional competency and personal independence of the preferred candidate. Questions are likely to explore Dame Rachel’s understanding of the role and powers of the Office of the Children’s Commissioner and what her priorities will be, if appointed.

Dame Rachel is currently the Chief Executive of the Inspiration Trust – a multi-academy trust of 14 academies based in Norfolk and north Suffolk. The new Children’s Commissioner will replace Anne Longfield, when her six-year term of office expires in February.

The Office of the Children’s Commissioner was established under the Children’s Act 2004, with a remit to promote the awareness of the views and interests of children.
