Specialist Advisers openings available with the Education Committee

31 May 2016

The Education Committee wishes to appoint two senior and respected individuals as 'Standing' Specialist Advisers, one on Education and another on Children's Services, to support its work in the 2015 Parliament.

The role

Standing Advisers provide policy advice to the Committee team and Members across the full range of the Committee's remit. Contributions take the form of oral contributions at private meetings of the committee and written contributions to briefing and draft reports.

Candidates must be available to attend meetings of the Committee relevant to their expertise. The Committee meets in Westminster on Wednesday mornings between 9.00am and 11.30am.

Requirements of the role

Candidates will need to demonstrate the following:

  • Extensive experience within the relevant field and up-to-date subject knowledge, gained through practice or academia (or both)
  • Experience of advising and influencing at a senior level
  • Credibility and authority within the sector
  • The ability to advise Members of Parliament in a politically neutral way

Successful candidates will be appointed for an initial two-year period, extendable by agreement to the end of the 2015 Parliament. Only in exceptional circumstances would you be asked to do more than two days' work in a particular week. You would be paid a daily honorarium on the basis of work done.

Deadline for applications was midday on Friday 1 July 2016.

How do I apply?

To express interest please send a CV, covering letter and a declaration of relevant interests to the address below. In your covering letter you should set out how you meet the criteria above, an indication of the amount of time you could realistically devote to Committee work and your ability to take on work at short notice if required.

Your declaration of interests should include anything that a reasonable person might consider could influence the advice you give the Committee. For example, active membership of a campaign group or relevant financial arrangement. Declared interests from successful applicants will be published.

Work of the Education Committee

The Education Committee is appointed by the House of Commons to examine the expenditure, policy and administration of the Department for Education. It scrutinises the work of the Department and the wider policy landscape through inquiries, one-off evidence sessions.

The Committee is supported by a secretariat drawn from the House of Commons Service, and is further advised by the House of Commons Library and National Audit Office. The Committee occasionally appoints specialist advisers to support particular inquiries.
