Debate on bank branch closures

On Thursday 30 June MPs took part in a debate on bank branch closures. This debate was scheduled by the Backbench Business Committee following a representation from Christian Matheson.
This debate was opened by Christian Matheson, Labour MP for the City of Chester, James Heappey, Conservative MP for Wells, and Mr Mark Williams, Liberal Democrat MP for Ceredigion .

Text of the motion
"That this House is concerned about continued bank branch closures and the damage that this causes to local communities, small businesses and the welfare of senior citizens; and calls upon the Government to help maintain access to local banking."
Backbench Business Committee
The Backbench Business Committee meets weekly on Tuesdays to consider requests for debates from any backbench Members of Parliament on any subject.
The Committee then has to decide how to allocate the limited Parliamentary time it has at its disposal. The Committee's meetings are always conducted in public and can be watched on Parliament TV.
