Ian Mearns MP re-elected as Chair of the Backbench Business Committee

MP for Gateshead, Ian Mearns has been re-elected as the Chair of the Backbench Business Committee following the start of the new session of Parliament.
Ian Mearns MP will formally take up position as Chair of the Committee in due course, when the remaining members of the Committee have been agreed by the House.
Ian Mearns MP, said:
“I am delighted to be returned as the chair of the Backbench Business Committee and wish to thank colleagues across the House for their continued support and forbearance.
“Backbenchers are the foot-soldiers and lifeblood of Parliament. And this Committee, which I’ve had the privilege of chairing for seven years, is one of the greatest platforms available to them for raising awareness and debating issues of vital importance to their constituents.
“As we all embark on this new session of Parliament, I look forward to using the experience I have gained, with this Committee, to shine a spotlight on backbench MPs and ensure that their important issues and constituents concerns are aired on the floor of the House of Commons and in Westminster Hall.”
