Timetable for election of Chair of the Backbench Business Committee

The Speaker of the House of Commons has today announced arrangements for the elections of the Chair of the Backbench Business Committee.

 

The Chair of the Backbench Business Committee is elected at the start of each session. 

This briefing note describes the practical arrangements for the election for the Chair of the Backbench Business Committee.The briefing note will also be made available to Members in the Vote Office.

Only candidates from parties not represented in the Government can stand as Chair of the Backbench Business Committee. Candidates require no fewer than 20 and no more than 25 supporters, of whom at least 10 have to come from a party represented in the Government and at least 10 from a party not represented in the Government or no party.  

Nominations should be submitted in writing to the Table Office—currently located in the Reference Room of the Library—or the Public Bill Office by 5pm on Monday 16 May.

The Speaker has declared that, if there is more than one candidate, the ballot will take place on Wednesday 18 May between 11am and 2.30pm.
