Committee responds to Brexit Minister on UK participation in EU meetings

3 October 2019

The EU Committee writes to Lord Callanan, Minister of State for Exiting the EU, requesting that the department share information on the UK attendance (or non-attendance) at EU meetings and consider the Committee's views in deciding which meetings to attend.

Background

The EU Committee wrote to the Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union on 4 September 2019 seeking clarification on the  rationale behind the Government's decision only to attend EU meetings where the UK has a “significant national interest” in the subject under discussion. The Committee also asked the Government to provide details on a weekly basis of which meetings it will or will not be participating in.

The Committee has now written to the Minister to seek further clarity on the thinking behind the policy, and also to seek assurances that the Government will continue to support parliamentary scrutiny of European Union documents.
