Communications and Digital Committee seeks specialist adviser

The House of Lords Communications & Digital Committee is seeking a specialist adviser to support the Committee’s scrutiny work on its new inquiry “Scaling up: AI and creative technology”.

We are extending the deadline to 27 September 2024.

The successful candidate will provide impartial expert advice to the Committee team and Members on a variety of matters. The specialist adviser will provide advice under the direction of the clerk.

The is an external part-time advisor role, remunerated by a daily fee: advisors are not employees of the House of Lords.

Role of the adviser

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Brief the team and Committee;
  • Propose topics for particular examination as part of the Committee’s scrutiny work;
  • Identify external stakeholders that may support the Committee’s work;
  • If required, attend committee meetings to assist deliberation;
  • If required, review draft sections of reports; and
  • Undertake other work to assist the Committee.

Skills

The successful candidate will have in-depth knowledge of the UK’s policy and business environment as it relates to scaling up, with a particular focus on matters relating to access to finance. Ideally the candidate would have knowledge of the fields of AI and creative technology, though in-depth expertise of both sectors is not essential.

The candidate will need to be able to provide advice in a clear and concise manner for both a specialist and non-specialist audience. A network of stakeholders in the field would be an advantage.

Time and conditions

The candidate will need to be available to provide part time advice from mid-October to early January. The commitment should not average more than a maximum of one day a week when the House is sitting. The post is renumerated with a daily fee of £300.
Specialist advisers are not employees of the House of Lords. The appointment is decided by the Committee.

The adviser would likely begin in mid-October 2024.
