Local Government Audit – HCLG Committee writes to Angela Rayner, Secretary of State to press for clarity on next steps on reform

9 January 2025

Florence Eshalomi, Chair of the Housing, Communities and Local Government (HCLG) Committee has written to Rt Hon Angela Rayner, Secretary of State, Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, to raise a series of questions on the Government’s consultation on plans to reform the local audit system in England.

The correspondence notes the Government’s decision to close the Office for Local Government (Oflog) and asks the Government to provide clarity on its plans for the proposed new oversight organisation – the Local Audit Office. It also asks for a response to predecessor Committee concerns regarding the presentation of data in the Local Authority Data Explorer, as well as a number of other recommendations made by the predecessor Committee for fixing the local audit system in England.
