The Work and Pensions Committee questions Matthew Taylor - Chief Executive of the RSA and leader of the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy's independent review on Modern Employment Practices - and employment minister Damian Hinds, on the economic impact of the growing 'gig economy'.

Focus of the session

This is expected to be the final evidence session in the inquiry into Self-employment and the gig economy. Questions to be addressed include:

  • How to ensure the correct balance between flexibility and employment rights/protections for gig economy workers
  • The extent to which low-paid self-employed people rely more heavily on support from the welfare system, compared to low-paid employees
  • Whether the Department intends to make changes to current Universal Credit and Jobcentre Plus support for self-employed people.
