Welsh Affairs Committee Chair responds to Spending Review

12 June 2025

Chair quote

Responding to the Government’s announcements in the Spending Review, Chair of the Welsh Affairs Committee, Ruth Jones MP, said:

“It’s promising to hear that the Government is taking the initiative to protect communities in Wales from the risks presented by coal tips with the announcement of £118 million being invested in coal tip safety.

Just this morning, the Committee heard from local authorities about the challenges they’re facing in remediating high risk coal tips, especially with limited funding. As part of our inquiry, we are keen to see whether this money will not only allow Wales to continue vital work in keeping people safe, but also deliver economic growth for former coalfield communities.

It is also encouraging to hear about the £445 million being allocated to railway projects in Wales. The Committee and I have been vocal that adequate investment in railway infrastructure has been long overdue. This funding is a step in the right direction, and we are keen to know if and how this funding will turn into real, visible improvements.

The announcement of £2.4 million for a Brand Wales programme to encourage inward investment and boost Welsh exports around the world shows a welcome commitment to promoting Welsh excellence and opening new doors for businesses.

We will be examining closely the impact on Wales of the other announcements in the Spending Review, including the Barnett consequentials.”
