Cabinet Secretary for Economy Jeremy Miles to appear before Welsh Affairs Committee

30 April 2024

On Wednesday 1 May, Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Welsh Language Jeremy Miles MS will give evidence to the Welsh Affairs Committee.

The evidence session will be the Committee’s first opportunity to hear from Mr Miles on Wales’ economic performance since he was appointed Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Welsh Language in March 2024. Data released in 2021 show Wales lagging behind other parts of the UK in per head of population while in 2023, Wales’ rate of economic inactivity was 19.9%, compared to 17.5% in the UK.

Mr Miles will answer questions related to the Committee’s inquiries on the Welsh defence industry and the impact of population change in Wales.

As part of the Committee’s inquiry into the impact of population change in Wales, MPs are likely to ask the Cabinet Secretary how the Welsh Government is approaching this issue. Committee members may explore the Welsh Government’s plans to encourage young people to stay in Wales, and its response to the high concentration of second homes in some parts of Wales.

On the defence industry, MPs may explore what role the Welsh Government sees for the industry in the Welsh economy, and the Welsh Government’s support for defence-related innovation, the STEM skills pipeline, and industrial partnerships.
