“We believe S4C needs a new Chair”: Welsh Affairs Committee writes to Culture Secretary

10 January 2024

The Chair of the Welsh Affairs Committee has this afternoon written to the Culture Secretary following its ‘concerning’ evidence session with the Chair of S4C and the Lead Non-Executive Board Member of the S4C Unitary Board.

Within his letter, Mr Crabb sets out the Committee’s continued concerns over the governance and leadership at the broadcaster. As stressed in its report on Broadcasting in Wales, the Committee believes in S4C as Wales’ only Welsh language broadcaster and its important role in promoting Welsh culture and reaching wider audiences. It is imperative that the organisation and its leadership has the confidence of all staff in addressing concerns to rebuild trust at all levels within S4C and with its wider stakeholders.

Given the importance of S4C and the scale of the challenges with respect to improving governance and culture within the organisation, the Committee has recommended that the Government appoint a new Chair to take this work forward.
