Cardiff Capital Region City Deal and funding for South Wales transport infrastructure examined

The Welsh Affairs Committee continues its inquiry into the economic impact of city and growth deals in Wales with a session focusing on the Cardiff Capital Region City Deal and the funding ringfenced for the South Wales Metro transport project.

Background

The Cardiff Capital Region City Deal is a programme agreed in 2016 between the UK Government, the Welsh Government and the ten local authorities in South East Wales aimed at bringing about significant economic growth in the region through investment, upskilling, and improved physical and digital connectivity.

Over £700 million of the deal has been ring-fenced for the development of the South Wales Metro – the integration of public transport services and systems in South East Wales around the hub of Cardiff Central.

Purpose of the session

In this session, the Committee will take evidence from the Chief Executive of the Cardiff Capital Region City Deal and the Vice-Chair of the Cardiff Capital Region Cabinet – the ultimate decision making body for the City Deal.

The Committee will question the panel on the specific spending proposals for the South Wales Metro and the economic prosperity it could bring to the area.

The Committee will also ask the panel about other spending proposals within the City Deal – such as digital connectivity – and what economic benefits this could bring to South Wales in the form of highly skilled jobs and business investment.
