Findings of S4C review considered
3 July 2018
The Welsh Affairs Committee will consider the future of S4C in a one-off evidence session.
Reforms to S4C
The Committee hears evidence from the author of 'Building an S4C for the future', Euryn Ogwen Williams, as well as the S4C Authority Chair and Chief Executive. Margot James MP, Minister for Digital and the Creative Industries, will also provide the Government's views on the report.
In February 2016 the Government announced that it would commission a comprehensive review of S4C, to take place in 2017. The Government said that the review would look at "the remit, governance and funding of S4C to ensure the broadcaster can continue to meet the needs of Welsh speaking audiences in the future and invest in high-quality programming."
The report's seven recommendations covered three key areas: delivering high-quality content and serving Welsh-speaking audiences, guaranteeing an S4C for the future, and securing an independent and effective S4C. The UK Government accepted all the recommendations addressed to it by the independent review. The Government has said that it also expects S4C to implement the recommendations and suggestions targeted at S4C management. S4C has been asked to provide a detailed implementation plan by July 2018 to outline how the proposed reforms will be fulfilled.

Chair's comments
Ahead of the session, Committee Chair David T. C. Davies MP said:
"S4C has a key role to play in promoting the Welsh language, as well as wider aspects of Welsh-speaking culture and society. The independent review provided several key recommendations for both S4C and Government, particularly in areas such as the channel's remit, funding and revenue streams, and governance structure.
We are looking forward to hearing from the author of the review, Euryn Ogwen Williams, S4C, and the Minister for Digital and the Creative Industries, about how S4C can continue to best serve the needs of Welsh-speaking audiences in the future – particularly as the organisation prepares to relocate its main headquarters to Carmarthen."
