Purpose of session
The Welsh Government currently manages the franchise but does not yet have authority to set specifications or award future contracts. The session is examining their preferred model for the rail network in Wales, including proposals for a not-for-profit franchise. It will also scrutinise their capacity for taking on further powers to decide rail provision and the level of co-ordination with the UK Government to decide current policy.
The committee is also hearing from two interest groups, North Wales Economic Ambition Board and North Wales & Mersey Dee Rail Task Force. They will provide insight into the quality of the current rail franchise in North Wales as well as indicating what improvements would help boost the local economy.
