Autumn Statement: Government will respond to Making Tax Digital
1 December 2016
Rt Hon. Andrew Tyrie MP, Chairman of the Treasury Committee, has written to Jane Ellison MP, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, following the announcement in the Autumn Statement that the Government will respond to the Making Tax Digital consultation in January.
- Letter from Philip Hammond MP, Chancellor of the Exchequer, dated 9 November 2016
- Letter from Ms Jane Ellison MP, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, dated 18 November 2016
- Letter to Ms Jane Ellison MP, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, dated 29 November 2016
- Inquiry: UK tax policy and the tax base
- Treasury Committee
Commenting on the correspondence, Mr Tyrie said:
"It is welcome that the Government has decided not to rush its response to HMRC's consultation. But this may mean that there is insufficient time for adequate consultation to take place on the draft clauses, once published. Were that to be the case, the clauses should be considered for the Finance Bill after next.
The Government may have to accept that the 2018 planned implementation timetable may not be compatible with adequate consultation."
