Committee to have strong role in appointment of OTS Chair

9 September 2016

Jane Ellison MP, the Financial Secretary to the Treasury, has written to Rt Hon. Andrew Tyrie MP, Chairman of the Treasury Committee, to agree that Parliament should have a strong role in the future appointment of the Chair of the Office of Tax Simplification.

Chair's comments

Commenting on the correspondence, Mr Tyrie said:

"Parliament's, and the Committee's, role in the appointment and dismissal of the Chair of the Office of Tax Simplification has been greatly bolstered by the arrangements set out in this letter. As a result, Parliament will now be better placed to safeguard the OTS's independence. The scope for interference - or the perception of interference - by the Treasury or Treasury Ministers is commensurately reduced.

A commitment from the Financial Secretary to the Treasury that she expects these arrangements to be permanent builds on the precedent set by the former Economic Secretary with respect to the appointment of the Chief Executive of the FCA."
