Chair comments on joint select committee Citizens' Assembly
20 June 2019
Earlier today, six select committees of the House of Commons announced plans to hold a Citizens' Assembly on combatting climate change and achieving the pathway to net zero carbon emissions.
The Citizens' Assembly is designed to explore views on the fair sharing of potential costs of different policy choices. It is intended to provide input to future select committee activity and will inform political debate and policy makers.
Chair's comments
Commenting on the announcement, Rt Hon. Nicky Morgan MP, Chair of the Treasury Committee, said:
“As I said when the Treasury Committee launched our inquiry into decarbonisation of the UK economy and green finance earlier this month, climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time.
“Since we launched our inquiry, the Prime Minister has committed to net zero carbon emissions for the UK by 2050.
“Climate change affects all of us, so today's announcement of a Citizens' Assembly is an ideal way to give a voice to the people.
“Like select committees, the Citizens' Assembly will work across political boundaries; it will demonstrate the conclusions around which a consensus can be built for how best to achieve net zero.”
