Restoration and Renewal of the Palace of Westminster

18 December 2016

Rt Hon. Andrew Tyrie MP, Chairman of the Treasury Committee, has written to Rt Hon. David Lidington MP, Leader of the House of Commons, to ask for greater clarity on the value for money of the Restoration and Renewal of the Palace of Westminster.

Commenting on the correspondence, Mr Tyrie said:

"This is one of the largest major restorations in the history of the public sector. It is likely to cost £3.5 billion over 5-8 years to give complete restoration and renewal to the Palace of Westminster.

This needs to be justified to taxpayers.  MPs need to be confident that such huge expenditure – and over such a short timeframe – is necessary.

Neither the report by Deloitte nor that by the Joint Committee provides all the information required to give that confidence.  So I have written to David Lidington to ask him to provide further information."
