Treasury Committee Chair comments on Online Safety Bill
17 March 2022
Chair's comment
Commenting on news that the Government will introduce its Online Safety Bill to Parliament, Rt. Hon. Mel Stride MP, Chair of the Treasury Committee, said:
“The Treasury Committee has called for the Government to legislate against fraudulent online adverts on numerous occasions, and it’s great to see that our recommendation has been accepted. At long last, online platforms will have a proper duty of care to their users
While this is a positive step in the right direction, further work needs to be done to combat the growing scourge of economic crime. But this announcement gives us hope that the Government is willing to act. Hopefully today is the beginning of the end for pernicious scammers defrauding unsuspecting victims online.”
