Committee to scrutinise OBR Budget Responsibility Committee appointment

3 December 2021

The Treasury Committee announces plans to scrutinise the Government’s preferred candidate to be appointed to the Office for Budget Responsibility’s (OBR) Budget Responsibility Committee.

In a letter to the Committee Chair published today, the Chancellor announces that Professor David Miles is the Government’s preferred candidate for the role.

The Committee will confirm or reject the Government’s proposed appointee following a pre-appointment hearing with Professor Miles at 2.15pm on Wednesday 15 December.

The role will become vacant at the end of Professor Sir Charles Bean’s term, at the beginning of January 2022.

Commenting on the pre-appointment hearing, Rt. Hon. Mel Stride MP, Chair of the Treasury Committee, said:

“The role of the Budget Responsibility Committee is very important, with members providing vitally important economic and fiscal forecasts upon which the government bases its economic decision making.

“The Treasury Committee has a statutory role in confirming or rejecting the Government’s proposed appointee. We are looking forward to having Professor Miles appear before us.

“As a Committee, we have had huge respect for, and have enjoyed working with, Sir Charles Bean in his time at the OBR. We thank him for his service and wish him well in the future.”
