Committee urges Chancellor to help those who have fallen through the gaps of coronavirus support
23 November 2020
The Treasury Committee’s Gaps in Support report in June urged the Government to act to help those who have lost livelihoods while being locked down and locked out of support.
The extensions to the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) and the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS) have been welcomed by many. But with many still excluded from these schemes, the concerns in our report have not yet been addressed.
Rt Hon. Mel Stride MP, Chair of the Treasury Committee, has written to the Chancellor of the Exchequer to ask him to explore initiatives similar to those in Scotland and Northern Ireland to help those not eligible for the CJRS or SEISS.
Chair's comments
Commenting on the correspondence, Mr Stride said:
“As various support schemes have been introduced, many people have fallen through the cracks.
“The Committee urged the Chancellor to help these people months ago, yet many of them continue to be excluded from support schemes through no fault of their own.
“The Chancellor should explore initiatives similar to those in Scotland and Northern Ireland to help those not eligible for the CJRS or SEISS.”
