Treasury Committee encourages committees to scrutinise Spending Review
6 March 2020
Rt Hon. Mel Stride MP, Chair of the Treasury Committee, has written to all departmental committee chairs to invite them to collaborate with the Treasury Committee to scrutinise the 2020 Spending Review.
- Letter from Chair to HMRC re Spending Review
- Letter from Chair to HMT re Spending Review
- Chair's Letter to Chairs re Spending Review Scrutiny
- Treasury Committee
Mr Stride has encouraged committees to engage with Ministers before the Spending Review about the pressures facing departments, the factors influencing their spending priorities, and the impact that decisions in the Spending Review are likely to have on future outcomes.
Commenting on the correspondence, Mr Stride said:
"Decisions will be taken shortly by the Government on spending for the next three or more years. Now is an ideal time for newly formed committees to engage with Ministers about their priorities for the Review.
"There is a lot at stake in this Spending Review. If committees can examine the spending priorities for their departments in this process and keep us informed, it will improve our ability to scrutinise cross-cutting issues with Treasury Ministers.
"For our part, I have written to HM Treasury, the department responsible for the process, and HMRC to find out more information about how they are approaching the Spending Review."”
