Mick Lynch, Network Rail and train operators questioned on rail strikes

9 January 2023

Transport Committee questions trade union chiefs and senior representatives of Network Rail and the Rail Delivery Group on progress towards ending the long-running dispute.

Witnesses

Wednesday 11 January, Grimond Room, Portcullis House

At 9.30am

  • Mick Lynch, General Secretary, RMT
  • Frank Ward, Interim General Secretary, TSSA
  • Mick Whelan, General Secretary, ASLEF

At 10.30am

  • Steve Montgomery, Chair, Rail Delivery Group
  • Tim Shoveller, Chief Negotiator, Network Rail

This evidence session will be the third of its kind since July 2022 and follows the strike action taken by rail workers in recent weeks. It also comes as the Government plans new legislation to set minimum service levels during industrial action.

The cross-party Committee will question witnesses on what an agreement between the unions and rail bosses may include, as well as the likelihood of further strikes.

TSSA Interim General Secretary, Frank Ward, will appear on a first panel of witnesses, alongside Mick Lynch, General Secretary of the RMT, and Mick Whelan, General Secretary of ASLEF. A second panel of witnesses will include Network Rail’s Chief Negotiator, Tim Shoveller and Steve Montgomery, Chair of the Rail Delivery Group which represents train companies.

The TSSA, along with Unite, recently accepted an offer from Network Rail; the RMT rejected the December offer. Both the RMT and the TSSA rejected an offer from the Rail Delivery Group in December.#
