Chair of Transport Committee comments on Citizens' Assembly
20 June 2019
Earlier today, six select committees of the House of Commons announced plans to hold a Citizens' Assembly on combatting climate change and achieving the pathway to net zero carbon emissions.
Chair's comments
Commenting on the announcement, Chair of the Transport Committee, Lilian Greenwood, said:
“With transport responsible for around a quarter of the UK's greenhouse gas and vehicles on the road contributing a staggering 93% of domestic transport emissions, urgent action to cut pollution in the sector is absolutely crucial if we are truly serious about meeting the target of net zero emissions by 2050.
The Citizens' Assembly is a real opportunity for members of the public to shape the debate and be directly involved in deciding how best we can reduce our impact on the environment and tackle climate change. I hope it will give a clear signal to those in charge of the need to come together to tackle head on the difficult questions that have been avoided for far too long.”
