How have Scottish sectors recovered from covid-19 and was government support sufficient?
17 May 2023
The Scottish Affairs Committee has today launched a short follow-up inquiry to consider how Scottish industry and sectors have recovered from the covid-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns.
Reacting to the start of the pandemic in 2020, the Committee launched its ‘Coronavirus and Scotland’ inquiry, which among other issues, considered the impact of coronavirus on various sectors – ranging from oil and gas to the food and drink sectors – in Scotland. The Committee concluded in its report that Scotland’s key sectors were impacted by covid-19, with a particular concern around a lack of seasonal workers and its impact on food availability. The Committee praised the financial packages from both Westminster and Holyrood.
The Committee is now keen to see whether sectors and industries across Scotland have recovered in the post-pandemic period and to assess the helpfulness of UK and Scottish government support.
Chair comment
Scottish Affairs Committee Chair, Pete Wishart MP, said:
“In the wake of covid-19, our Committee was eager to assess the effect of the pandemic on people and businesses across Scotland, and what policies Westminster and Holyrood have put in place in response.
“Three years on, with life back to normal, we’re keen to see how well industries and sectors across Scotland have recovered. Was the financial support from the UK and Scottish governments sufficient? Are there new strategies that industry experts suggest we adopt should there ever be another pandemic?”
